The STC-3D MK2 Lanen is one of the only static mics on the market equipped, with a truly large 34mm capsule and a double 1-inch gold-plated diaphragm, in this price range. Most other brands talk about a "wide" membrane for 16-19mm capsules, and the difference is sizable!
Contrary to “entry-level” products that are often too cold and tinny, the STC-3D MK2 Lanen offers you a sound that perfectly reproduces the subtleties and warmth of the recorded source and allows you to obtain effective recordings with a high degree of presence.
"R&D" for the STC-3D MK2 was conducted in France by the PRODIPE team under the guidance of Ludovic Lanen.
He explains: “If you only have this mic in your studio, thanks to its three directionalities (uni-, bi- and omnidirectional), its low-cut filter of 10dB/octave at 100Hz and its attenuator of -10db, you’ll be able to handle any situation and record everything: percussions, guitars, pianos, mood music, brass instruments, and, of course, vocals. It will be just as comfortable on stage where electrostatic mics are increasingly in demand.
During its development, I wanted it to be equipped with a truly large, 34 mm capsule with a double 1-inch gold-plated diaphragm, like the AKG 414 or the NEUMANN U87.
The STC-3D MK2 measures up to the best studio models because being inferior was simply out of the question, despite its extremely attractive price. And all the feedback we receive from sound engineers and artists confirms that we’ve succeeded.”
With the globalisation and circulation of know-how, a high price is no longer necessarily synonymous with quality. " After being really impressed by the performance of the PRODIPE Stereo RSL, I decided to take a closer look at the STC-3D MK2 Ludovic Lanen that I just received.
Seeing as I was mainly in a hurry to test it out and I was hosting a salsa group that very evening at the MUZIK JAM PALACE,
I decided to use for a live performance.
I let the singer know that this mic wasn’t to be touched during the concert, since it was a hanging mic and not designed to be handled. Once the rules of the game were accepted, we began the tests.
The singer is gifted with great range, able to shift from a husky voice to one that’s luscious and warm.
The first notes of the percussions, brass, guitars and bass began, the singer breathed in and… and… and… WOOOOOW!!!!
I was immediately struck by the accuracy and dynamism of the STC-3D MK2, the voice is really present and the words stand out naturally. It’s clear, distinct and precise. The spectrum seems open to infinite possibilities without any sense of imbalance.
The singer looked at me with delight, pleasantly surprised by how he’d heard himself… I got the impression he took me for a miracle worker, though I hadn’t made any corrections except for a cut at 50hz to leave a maximum spectral opening…everything else was at zero…
So it wasn’t down to me if the singer’s voice came through exceptionally clear, and I had to admit that it was most most certainly the STC-3D MK2 that had done all the work.
This mic is so well balanced, that it preserves the voice’s texture simply and naturally.
The STC-3D MK2 is thus a formidable adversary for the big competing brands. For similar equipment from the so-called leading brands you’ll have to fork over between 3 and 5 times more. At €249 taxes included, it’s clearly among the best value for money on the market…"
